Christ of the Abyss
 _________
This larger than life statue is called Christ of the Abyss and is located in Pennecamp Park off the east coast of Key Largo, Florida.  Pennecamp is a protected marine park and the statue is the only manmade object in the park.  Pennecamp is a divers paradise and offers an incredible variety of undersea life.  At the time of this shot, the statue had not been cleaned in a while and had a thin layer of Fire Coral on it.  I watched several divers pose by the statue for photographs who quickly retracted their hands after touching the statue to steady themselves.  Fire Coral feels like a bee sting when it contacts bare skin.  I have even been stung by Fire Coral through a Lycra dive suit.  You learn to recognize it pretty quickly and give it a wide berth.
