A short trip up Highway 9 in Washington state brought me to the Canadian border.  I have heard numerous horror stories from motorcycle riders about Canadian Customs but when I arrived at customs in Sumas I was greeted by a young polite agent that asked me a few questions about my travel plans and then wished me a good trip.  I camped just a few minutes from the ferry in Tsawwassen so I could get an early start to Vancouver Island in the morning.  It rained again all night so I had a soggy start.

The ferry ride to Vancouver Island is rather expensive at $22 Canadian.  It's a 90 minute ride and I'm sure the scenery is fantastic.  Unfortunately, I couldn't see much of it in the rain.  The ferry has a great buffet as well as gift shop, video arcade and tourist information.  The boat is pretty big also.  This one has six floors and an observation deck on top of that.  When I got to the island, I rode into Victoria and looked for something dry to do.  After an hour of failing miserably, I headed back east.  On the way back, I was allowed on the bridge where I met  Captain Ray Hanson (center), 2nd Officer Frank Kung (left) and Quartermaster Mark Jourdenis (right). Their job is not easy when you consider the large fishing fleet in the Strait of Georgia between the mainland and Vancouver Island.

I hope that if I get away from the coast, the weather might clear up a little so I headed east on Highway 1.  For now, I'm in search of the sun.
